In today's business climate, it is important not only to have a strategic direction for your business but also a sense of the tactical items needed to execute that strategic direction. By properly implementing a project management information system at your business, a department head can be kept informed of projects in the department and the business head can see the status of projects across the entire business.
Of course, this can be a journey with several potholes and roadblocks or it can be a pleasant journey with minimal risks and issues. There are several keys to having a successful implementation at your workplace. Here are just a few for your consideration
- Be flexible. This doesn't give the right to miss deadlines that are reasonable and agreed to by all parties, but it does mean that you do have the responsibility and duty to raise any concerns at any point in the timeline.
- Ask questions if you don't understand something. The person leading the implementation should be able to answer the question immediately or at least get the answer for you in a short time frame.
- Determine what your process needs to be BEFORE you purchase a software package. By having a process in place first, you not only aren't spending money on a software package that may not suit your needs now, but by purchasing a software package first without a process, you may find that the software package really doesn't work for your needs.
